  • Erik Lamela: Stick or Twist

    Posted on 13 June, 2015

30th of August 2013, Tottenham Hotspur concluded a day of extreme excitement for their supporters where highly rated midfielder Christian Eriksen, and promising centre half Vlad Chiriches joined the club from Ajax and Steaua Bucuresti respectively. However, arguably the most exciting of all, was the third signing of that day, Erik Lamela.

Argentinian winger, Lamela join Spurs from Italian side Roma in a blockbuster £30 Million deal, following a fantastic season in 2012/13 in the Seria A, scoring 15 goals, despite Roma’s poor performances, finishing only 6th in the league table.

Much was made of Lamela’s multi-million move to England, many suggesting Tottenham had perfectly replaced the outgoing Gareth Bale, with one of world footballs most promising talents.

However, fast-forward two years, and Lamela has failed to set the world alight.

In fact, his first season in the Lilywhite colour of Tottenham can be described as nothing less than completely disastrous. Despite initial promise, Lamela’s performances dropped disastrously, failing to get involved with matches and completely lacking the physicality to compete in the English game.

Manager at the time, Andre Villas Boas clearly lost any small faith that he held in him and he was dropped, whilst Villas Boas’ successor Tim Sherwood showed even less faith, dropping him from the squad completely, blaming it on a mysterious ankle injury.

Summer 2014, Tottenham appoint Mauricio Pochettino as manager of the club, with many suggesting the Argentinian would be able to get the best out of his fellow countryman.

Once again, Lamela showed early signs of promise during the season, including a fantastic ‘Rabona’ strike against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League, one of five goals he scored during a season where his form drifted, leading to him being dropped again. Despite recording a very respectful eight assists during the season, supporters were once again disappointed with Lamela’s overall showing.

And now we get to the present. Reports are currently flying around that Italian giants, Juventus are preparing a bid to take the Argentinian back to Italy, with a £20 Million figure being suggested as one that they’d be prepared to offer for Lamela’s services.

So, would it be a good idea for Daniel Levy and Pochettino is cut their ties with Lamela and sell him? Obviously many will point to the case of Gareth Bale, large price tagged player who initially struggled, but eventually developed into a world-beater, when given the time. But when do we draw the line in ‘give him time.’

At 23, Lamela still has plenty of time to develop, but by how much? Will he ever achieve the status of a £20 Million player again? Arguably no, therefore it would make the most sense to cash in now, and invest in a different player for that money that’ll come in and make an impact straight away.

But then we’d be back to step 1, replacing one player with another and hoping they’ll fit. Just as Lamela replaced Bale, Lamela’s replacement might also take time to settle. So I believe Erik Lamela should be given at least one more season at the club to try and prove himself, and if then still he isn’t performing, then cut our losses. Just two seasons isn’t long enough for a player, who is still young.
