  • We Float Like A Butterfly And Sting Like A Bee

    Posted on 5 November, 2015

West Ham are the Muhammad Ali of football: we float like a butterfly and sting like a bee! Yes it’s been a unbelievable season. In season’s past, we would of considered it a success if we finished mid-table and recorded ONE …victory against Spurs. Yet the disciples of The Academy Of Football arrived at The Boleyn Ground last Saturday expecting us to beat Chelsea. Confidence sky high or what? Its gone through the roof….and so have the expectations.

We have to be realistic though. It’s inevitable that at some time we will suffer injuries and have a dip in form. But we have a manager and a squad who are capable of bouncing back. I can see us finishing between 6th and 8th, which would be a tremendous achievement.

Anyone thinking that we have been all about quick sharp flowing Barcelona football needs to think again. In some matches we have resembled a Sam Allardyce team: strong and robust, however with skilful ringmasters in Lanzini and Payet. We have been stylish and inventive with breathtaking pace.

We have reminded me of the great Muhammad Ali in his fight against George Foreman. Back then, Foreman was a monster few people people gave Ali a snow ball’s chance against Foreman. Pre-fight, Ali’s dressing-room resembled a morgue. Ali’s handlers feared for his life.

For almost eight brutal rounds, Ali lay on the ropes, taking everything Foreman could offer ,then towards the end of the eighth round Ali taunts Foreman and says “Is that all you’ve got in your locker George? You bum!” Then with bewildering pace, Ali moves off the ropes and lands a flurry of punches. Down goes George Foreman, and against all odds, Ali regains the World Heavyweight Title!

Unbelievable scenes followed afterwards. I think its fair to say most West Ham fans felt like Ali’s handlers when we went to Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. We did not think we had a snowballs chance of winning.

Against Arsenal, we had a 16 year old centre-back in midfield called Reece Oxford, at Anfield, a ground we had not won at in FIFTY-TWO years. We had a bench full of kids. Next up was the trip to Manchester City where the best we could hope for was a goal. Like Ali, we absorbed everything Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City could throw at us.

However we were ruthless on the break, hitting them with pacey and skilful counter attacks, masterminded by the signings of the transfer window Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini. Ballers or what?!! Yossi who? Let’s say it like it is, we have a top notch squad who are united and believe in the manager.

What a manager Super Slav is. I’m not knocking Sam Allardyce as he did a good job in pulling the club up by the proverbial jock straps after relegation. But when Sam was asked to play a more attractive style of football last season, he switched to the diamond formation after a while opposing teams sussed this out and Sam had no answers.

Not so with Slaven. He can set his team out in any formation and picks players who are comfortable in the way he wants the team set up for a specific match. Slaven Bilic is without doubt very astute tactically and a great man manager. Also refreshingly honest and dignified a credit to not just The Club but the game itself.

Some West Ham fans are upset by the media’s lack of recognition regards our team’s performances itself. My answer to that? F… em! Who cares?! Great days lay ahead. With the likes of Song and Valencia back, you can expect even better performances with flowing inventive football on the deck. The key thing is for everyone to keep being level-headed and focused. After our loss to Watford, we have to be ruthless and make the gulf in class tell.

I’m sure The Commander in Chief, Slaven Bilic ,will make sure we are ready for battle come Saturday. We are more than a football club, we’re a way of life! COYI!
