For the first time since I can remember, England are going into a World Cup without the media piling pressure on the players claiming they are the golden generation and that they are going to win it. And this might help them. The general public aren’t expecting us to win it either. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t going without hope.
We have some very good young players and some new players on the international scene that I am very excited to see. Sterling, Sturridge, Barkley, Henderson, Wilshere, The Ox, Lallana, Shaw and Rickie Lambert. These players have only just recently came into the fold and could all play a big part in the World Cup. We also have a good solid centre back pairing now in Jagielka and Cahill, and I am looking forward to watching them play together for their first tournament together.
Then I come to Wayne Rooney. He has the ability to be the best in the world on his day, and he really needs to prove people wrong about him not producing on the international stage. I don’t think we can afford to drop him because he is capable of producing moments of brilliance but I also don’t think we should compromise Sturridge by playing him on the left. It’s going to be difficult for Roy whichever way you look at it.
I am most excited about the players we can bring off the bench. Lets say Roy goes with the first 11 he picked to play Peru, then we have Wilshere, Sterling, The Ox and Barkley who can come off the bench and make a big difference. The trio of Sterling, Ox and Barkley is scary to have on the bench because they are all young, fearless players. But most of all they are a direct. They will get the ball and run at the defence, and make things happen. Sometimes England look like they are keeping the ball for the sake of it and don’t really know what to do it with it next. So bringing one of them on would be a great option.
One weak point in the team is Glen Johnson, as he has been very inconsistent for Liverpool this year, and I don’t think he was the player he was when they bought him. His main part of his game in the past, his attacking, has declined rapidly and that makes him exposed as a weak defender. Shame Kyle Walker is injured. It’s also a shame that Walcott is injured as he has never had a crack at a World Cup yet despite going to one when he was 16! He would have added extra strength to our squad.
All I hope for is that we have a decent run so we can have some hope longer than the group games and so I can enjoy listening to Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) for just a bit longer. We do have a difficult group, but I can see us getting a draw from Italy and us beating Uruguay providing Suarez has a quiet game. And Costa Rica is an easy three points.
