  • Manchester United Deny Chelsea in Stoppage Time

    Posted on 26 October, 2014
Manchester United scored a dramatic stoppage time equaliser to secure a 1 -1 draw against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Didier Drogba rolled back the years to give Chelsea a lead only for Robin Van Persie to equalise in the dying seconds of a dramatic encounter.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal made two changes to the side that drew 2-2 at West Brom in their last outing. Phil Jones was out injured so Chris Smalling came in to the starting eleven. Marouane Fellaini started after scoring at West Brom. Radamel Falcao was out injured while Wayne Rooney was still serving a suspension.

Manchester United Lineup: De Gea, Rafael, Smalling, Rojo, Shaw, Blind, Fellaini, Mata, Januzaj, Van Persie and Di Maria

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made two changes to the team that won 2-1 at Crystal Palace bringing in Didier Drogba and Filipe Luis. Cesar Azpilicueta was suspended, while Loic Remy was injured. Diego Costa was out with a virus.

Chelsea Lineup: Courtois, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Felipe Luis, Fabregas, Matic, Willian, Oscar, Hazard, Drogba

Manchester United had the first real chance of the game in the 23rd minute when Adnan Januzaj picked out Robin van Persie but the Dutchman’s low strike was well saved by the advancing Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea’s best chance came in the 41st minute when Oscar cut back and picked out Didier Drogba on the edge of the box but his low shot was pushed away by David de Gea.

An intense first half ended 0 – 0 with two closely matched sides missing that final touch.

Chelsea started the first half strongly and in the 51st minute Eden Hazard broke through one-on-one with David de Gea but the Spanish goalkeeper made a tremendous save to keep United level.

But it wasn’t long before Chelsea finally took the lead. From a corner in the 52nd minute Didier Drogba got a yard on Rafael and with a powerful near-post header put Chelsea 1 – 0 up. It was vintage Drogba reminiscent of his Champions League final equaliser of 2012 and his first Premier League goal since March 2012.

There was nothing by way of serious reply from United and Chelsea looked comfortable in possession but it all went pear shaped for the Blues in added time.

First, they went down to ten men in the 93rd minute when a foul by Branislav Ivanovic meant a second booking and a sending off. The resulting free-kick by Angel Di Maria was met by Marouane Fellaini with a full-blooded header, which was saved by Courtois, but ball fell to Robin Van Persie and the Dutchman blasted home.

Chelsea were the better team in the second half but United edged the first so overall it was a fair result. However, Manchester United will surely feel the happier of the two sides as they continue to improve under Louis van Gaal.
