  • Three-Way Battle For Premier Prize

    Posted on March 29, 2014
The Premier League title race appears to now be between three sides after Arsenal’s home draw with Swansea left them adrift of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

But who will eventually come out on top in May?

In what is shaping up to be one of the tightest finishes in years, all three clubs can lay claim to a realistic chance of lifting the trophy but, as bet365′s current odds reflect, City are favourites, just ahead of Chelsea, with the in-form Reds cast as lively outsiders.

Many pundits would have picked City and Chelsea to be battling it out for the biggest domestic prize but, in a season of surprises, very few, if any, would have suggested Brendan Rodgers’ side would be in the mix at this stage.

Liverpool have been fantastic for much of the season and appear to be improving as the campaign progresses – the sign of a side peaking nicely for the run-in. In Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge they have the two top-scorers in the league and have a young, hungry squad playing with pace, guile and intelligence – blitzing their way through most who cross their path.

Rodgers deserves much credit for the way he has transformed the club’s fortunes since his arrival in the summer of 2012. Not only has he implemented a modern, possession-based, pressing game designed to attack teams at will, he has been able to get the best out of players who were struggling to fulfil their potential. Liverpool have not had the distraction of European football this season, and that has undoubtedly helped them with an unlikely title charge but the way they have been able to bridge the gap from seventh last year to being around the top two for much of the campaign is mightily impressive.

They have also been able to compete on the pitch despite not having the financial resources of their rivals off it, to make their achievements so far even more eye-catching.

However, despite the obvious improvement, actually winning the title still looks a tough task and Rodgers’ side may have to settle for a better-than-expected third-place finish, but within touching distance of the top two to give them plenty to build on for 2014-15.

So it is likely to come down to either City or Chelsea in the end with very little to choose between the two. Jose Mourinho’s side have been, as expected, very difficult to beat and have matched solid consistency with some stand-out performances when they needed them most.

Mourinho has often bemoaned the lack of a killer edge up front and they have struggled to score goals at times with Fernando Torres continuing to toil in the league, despite regularly firing in Europe. Samuel Eto’o has stepped up to the plate in recent weeks and they too are ominously gaining momentum at the perfect time.

However, it is City who should just edge it – possibly on the final day again like they spectacularly did two years ago. The way they destroyed Manchester United proves they are up for the fight and, without the distraction of any other tournaments to play in, they are fully focused on the title bid.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side are the masters of their own destiny and, provided they win their games in hand, they will come out on top.

It will not be easy but a squad packed full of talents like Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero and David Silva – to name just four – are capable of going on a season-ending winning run to take them over the line in first place – just.
