  • Premier League Disappointing XI

    Posted on 17 May, 2015

Usually at the end of season everyone is praising the best performers of the season, however I want to be different and look at the most disappointing players this season, not the worst but the ones that haven’t performed to the standard we know that they have.

Starting with the disappointing formation of the season. 3-5-2 – Louis Van Gaal’s failed formation from the start of the season.

GK – Tim Howard – Considering how good the Everton keeper has been for the blues and looking at how good he was for the USA in the world cup, in particular that record breaking game against Belgium where he had 15 saves in a heart-breaking extra time loss. Sadly for Tim it seems that he may now be past it, Everton for so long have relied on their solid defence and outstanding keeper however this season there has been no consistency and been the worst defensive season at Everton for a long time. He is no longer commanding at corners and is leaving his defenders with very little confidence, and when he was injured in the winter, Joel Robles was sensational in a lot of games, maybe it’s the end for the American at Everton at least at the number one.

CB – Elaquim Mangala – £32 million? Really? Manchester City tried to sign him last January but failed on deadline day, maybe it would have been a good thing if they had missed out on in the summer. How either City or the French centre back can justify that price is beyond me, his defensive positioning is terrible, very poor concentration levels unless he’s playing against Diego Costa, where he excelled. He seems to be making a mistake in every performance, the game against Manchester United away was arguably the worst defensive display I have ever seen in the Premier league, his vulnerability has in my eyes caused Vincent Kompany to have his worst season because he has had to play nearly every match as two centre halves. Porto must be laughing all the way to the bank, City are going to need and go and get another new centre half this summer if they are wanting to win the league again soon.

CB – Per Mertersacker – I was a big admirer of the big German or as the Arsenal fans say ‘BFG’, no need to explain that. After winning the world cup in Brazil in July with his national side, Mertersacker has seemingly suffered a bit of a hangover. I know he has always been slow but his defensive positioning and strength have always been outstanding, but this season he seems lost in matches. The game against Monaco at home was the perfect example of this when Monaco scored their third he positioned himself awfully and made a pathetic attempt of a tackle for such a big dominating defender. And then against Stoke away when the gunners were three nil down at half time, he ducked out of the way in a corner which led to a Stoke goal, for a six foot five defender it was embarrassing. Admittedly as the season has gone he and the rest of the Arsenal defence has improved, however he still has been a disappointment this season.

CB – Steven Caulker – Well its two consecutive seasons of relegation for the former Spurs man. I’m not saying that he is the sole reason behind both Cardiff, where he was the skipper, and QPR going down and in fact he hasn’t been QPR’s worst player, it’s the sheer fact that Redknapp spent a lot of money on this defender who hasn’t replicated his form of Spurs and Swansea for a while now. Now he’s not having to play alongside the best defenders particularly Clint Hill but because Caulker broke into the England team at such a young age I was expecting him to go on leaps and bounds since then but he hasn’t. I fully expect another Premier League side to go and buy him and hopefully this time he’ll pick a better club to sign for and not get relegated three seasons in a row.

RM – Mauricio Isla – Although the Chilean international is only on loan a lot was expected of the full back wing back hybrid defender. He hasn’t shown any of the form of the World Cup or any of the form he showed for Juventus at times, in all honesty he’s done pretty much nothing this season, albeit not many QPR players have done anything but I expected a lot more of Isla considering his previous. Just another foreign player to excel abroad yet comes to England and fails, he isn’t the last in this team either.

LM – Angel Di Maria – The British record transfer at £59.7 million. The new number seven for Manchester United. The man of the match in last year’s European Cup final and then helped his national side, Argentina, get to the World Cup final. And in all honesty what has he done? Yes he scored that wonder chip against Leicester and in the early part of the season looked worth the money but since November has been largely anonymous in matches. He has really struggled to gain his footing in the Premier League, he has never had to play in such physical matches and such a high speed week in week out like you do in England. The Premier League does not take any prisoners, it’s a brutal league without a winter break, and it needs players to give their all every match, tracking back, making tackles and getting stuck in. And this is something that Di Maria has not been able to do, maybe it’s the weather, the fact that he has to play constantly at such high intensity, or the fact that he’s playing with lesser players than he was at Madrid or maybe it’s the fact that he isn’t playing in a fixed position now. Next season is a monumental year for the winger if he is going to be a success at Old Trafford, but at the moment he is in this side. I know there have been worse players than Di Maria this season in this position but when you pay that much and come with that big of a reputation and you don’t deliver that much you are going to be seen as a disappointment sadly.

CM – Yaya Toure – How short can twelve months seem in football, last season he was leading Manchester City to the title, with his classic barn storming runs from midfield and then those belters from twenty and thirty yards out. This season City are nowhere near the champions and Toure himself has been abysmal, he’s looking disinterested in every match, lazy and just no longer that world class player we’ve become used to seeing light up the league. Toure scored one of the best goals last season which really sealed the championship for City when he ran from the halfway line taking on the entire Aston Villa defence before driving a beautiful finish past Brad Guzan, he hasn’t done that once this season. In my eyes a lot of this goes back to that bizarre story in the summer when Yaya’s agent was complaining that City had failed to buy the Ivory Coast man a birthday cake, and if that’s the reason why he looks so careless this year, then he is pathetic. Toure gets paid £250,000 a week, if you’re that concerned about a stupid birthday cake then go buy one yourself. He is everything that is wrong with modern football, it looks like if he doesn’t get his way then he sulks and doesn’t care about the team. I feel that his time in England is up and will leave this summer looking for another pay cheque, he will still be a Manchester City legend and one of the finest players the Premier League has ever seen but this season he is the captain of this disappointing eleven.

CM – Gareth Barry – For me the former England man was one of last season’s best signings on loan from Man City, and when he joined permanently in the summer there wasn’t an Everton fan who wasn’t delighted so he could carry on that brilliant new partnership with James McCarthy and creating the freedom for Coleman and Baines to break forward constantly but this season he’s looked past it. In all fairness to Barry very few of Everton’s players can come out of the season with a better reputation, the Europa League campaign has seemingly put Martinez’s side through the ringer and they just haven’t looked as good as last campaign. Barry seems to have lost a yard of pace and doesn’t look as comfortable as he once did, thus affecting Ross Barkley’s game who relies on quick balls to feet and in front of him which Barry was doing regularly last season, one touch and pass forward. Everton have been nowhere near as exciting as last season and the form of Gareth Barry, their solid reliable midfielder, has been one of the main causes of this. Barry slowing can also be seen in the sheer number of yellow cards this season which has taken to infamy of being the most cautioned player in Premier League history.

CM –Jack Rodwell – What a waste of talent young Jack is. I remember seeing Rodwell come through at Everton and looking forward to see this man go onto being an Everton and England great, however, he made the worst decision of his career by being greedy. He joined City a few seasons back for around £15 million and for a big contract, at Manchester City he did hardly anything, similar to Scott Sinclair, then he joined Sunderland in the summer for just under £9 million and they thought they could restart this young players career, he’s been shocking for Sunderland. Yes Sunderland have been poor themselves but that doesn’t stop Lee Cattermole being brilliant. Rodwell has ruined his career and now needs to get that back on tracks before he ends up being another Michael Johnson.

FW – Radamel Falcao – The Colombian striker who is on loan from Monaco came in on deadline day as a bit of a shock, not many thought United could pull off another high profile signing, after the Di Maria transfer, in the same summer without having European football. The striker has scored goals galore everywhere he has been, Porto, Athletico Madrid and then Monaco, yet at United he has been truly awful. The serious knee injuries he has suffered in recent years have definitely been a major factor to the failed season, he clearly hasn’t got that pace or agility he once had which put the fear into all goalkeepers and defenders in the world. Also the sheer pace of the English game isn’t good for Falcao who hasn’t been able to settle here yet. I’d now be very shocked if Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United did take up the option of buying him and I feel he’ll be back at Monaco in the summer searching for a new club. Sadly the ‘Great Falcao’ will join Diego Forlan, Andriy Shevchenko, Robinho and Fernando Morientes as players who have been incredible in other European leagues but failed to make the cut over here. Sadly for Falcao, he walks into this side.

FW – Mario Balotelli – Another who walks into this side, quite literally, is this extremely weird individual from Italy. We continue to hear about how Mario is ever so talented but he simply needs grounding and he simply needs to right manager to look after to show what a world class player he can be. I have never believed this, I never rated him at Inter Milan, neither did Mourinho, I thought he was a glorified penalty taker at Manchester City, and caused training ground bust ups, red cards and a general feel of not a likeable character, then he went back to Milan but this time with AC. Again he did very little, okay he performed well at Euro 2012 for Italy particularly against Germany but that’s all he’s done. For some unknown reason Liverpool decided to replace Luis Suarez with him and guess what. He has done nothing again, he doesn’t fit in at Liverpool, and Brendan Rodgers sets his team to press the opposition from the front which was perfect with Suarez. This cannot work with Mario because he is simply too lazy a player, and is clearly interested in himself more than the team. There has been very little to shout about this season at Anfield but this has to lowest of the low this season. If Liverpool get any of that £16 million back they’ll have done well, he’ll more than likely end up back in Italy, but what a disappointment.
